What is an Implant?

Implants are artificial tooth roots made of titanium, which are placed in the jawbone in order to eliminate single or multiple tooth deficiencies in the person. In implant treatment, a titanium screw is placed in the jawbone without any treatment to the healthy teeth on the sides of the missing tooth. Since the titanium screwing system is intended to be completely integrated with the jawbone, the time to wait for the prosthetic tooth to be inserted varies between 3 and 6 months depending on the surgical procedures performed. Surgical procedures such as cleaning the cyst located in the jawbone, sinus lifting (sinus cavity filling operation) may prolong the implant placement and prosthetic tooth insertion time. If the maxillary sinuses have sagged over time, the bone structure has deteriorated and the volume has been lost, a "sinus lifting" operation should be performed before the implant. The aim of the operation is to create space for the titanium screw in the area where implant treatment will be applied. Sinus lifting operation is a procedure in which the sinus membrane is lifted up and the cavities are filled with bone powder after local or general anaesthesia is applied to the patient. After the procedure, the cavities are expected to ossify and reach a sufficient width-height for the implant. In cases where the bone structure in the area under the sinuses has not been lost too much, it may not be necessary to wait too long for implant placement. The advantage of implant treatment compared to bridge treatment is that the teeth are more robust and long-lasting. Since the bone structure in the body continues to change, the prosthetic teeth applied with a bridge may start to move, shake and behave incompatible with other teeth over time. The quality and width of the bone in the area to be prosthesis is also effective in the implant decision. The permanence of prosthetic teeth supported by implants is similar to natural teeth as long as proper care is provided. Prosthetic teeth fixed with titanium screws are teeth that can be used for a lifetime if they are not smoked, oral and dental health care is fulfilled completely and routine dentist examinations are not interrupted. Anyone who does not have any health problems other than tooth deficiency problem and who has reached the age of 18 can have implants. People with diabetes, hypertension and heart disease should definitely get the opinion of their physicians and share it with their dentist before implant treatment. It is risky for those with blood clotting problems to have implants.
