Wisdom Tooth (20 Age) Extraction

Wisdom tooth extraction is a treatment that most people need and worry about today. One of the important reasons why it has become so common today is the shrinking of our jaws with our eating habits that change over time. However, incompatibilities between tooth sizes and jaw sizes also play a role in the emergence of problems with wisdom teeth.  Teeth that cannot find a place in the jaw either remain impacted or come out by disrupting the jaw and tooth structure. In such cases, wisdom teeth can be extracted by standard means or surgical operation depending on the condition of the tooth in the jaw.

In which cases is wisdom tooth extraction necessary?

- Tooth decay; Since wisdom teeth are located at the back of the jaw, they are more difficult to clean during tooth brushing. Therefore, they can easily decay. Severely decayed wisdom teeth need to be extracted.

- Cyst formation; sometimes cysts caused by infection in the tooth root or follicle of the tooth can form. In such cases, the tooth must be extracted.

- Pericuronoid; It means inflammation of the soft tissue around the tooth and is common in teeth that have not fully erupted. In the presence of acute infection, antibiotics may be required before tooth extraction.

- Space limitation; In cases where the jaw is small, wisdom teeth can push other teeth and cause a feeling of pressure and pain. In such cases, tooth extraction may be required.

- During orthodontic treatment; During orthodontic treatment, wisdom teeth can sometimes make treatment difficult due to their position. In some cases, it may cause the teeth to become crowded again after the end of the treatment. Therefore, it may be necessary to extract the teeth with the advice of the orthodontist.

20 Age Tooth Extraction Methods
Extraction of wisdom teeth is performed by two different methods. These can be named as standard and surgical methods. In both methods, local anaesthesia is applied to prevent the patient from feeling pain.

Standard Extraction Procedure
In the standard extraction procedure, the wisdom tooth in the area numbed with local anaesthesia is removed with the help of tooth extraction equipment.

Surgical Extraction Procedure
The application of the surgical method for wisdom tooth extraction is preferred if the tooth is impacted or broken. Before this procedure, the area is numbed with local anaesthesia and a painless tooth extraction is aimed. During this procedure, the gum in the area where the tooth is located is opened and the tooth is removed by intervening in the bone tissue around the tooth if necessary.
It is expected to have swelling in the extraction area and on the face after surgical tooth extraction.

Recovery Process
After wisdom tooth extraction, pain sensation may occur for 2-3 days on average. It is necessary to follow the doctor's recommendations to reduce the intensity and duration of this pain. Complete recovery may take about a week. However, this period may be slightly longer if a surgical procedure has been performed and can be up to 3 weeks for some patients.
